How Many Overnights Is 50/50 Custody?
182 or 183 nights each, and the reason it's never a clean split.
3 min read
A year has 365 nights. Two parents can't split an odd number evenly, so one parent always gets 183 and the other 182. In a leap year it's 183 each, the only years that divide cleanly.
That's the short answer. The longer answer is that the schedule pattern, the start date and the holiday rotation all move the number, and the figure you put on a court form should be the one your actual calendar produces.

Schedule pattern
50/50Each parent keeps the same two weekdays every week and the weekends alternate, producing a repeating 2-2-5-5 night pattern.

Why 182 and 183
Every standard equal schedule repeats on a 14-day cycle giving 7 nights to each parent. 365 divided by 14 is 26 cycles with 1 night left over. That leftover night goes to whichever parent the rotation happens to land on, which depends entirely on your start date.
It does not automatically even out the next year. Each year starts one day further into the cycle, so unless those two positions belong to different parents, the same parent takes the extra night twice. A week-on/week-off plan that begins on the first day of one parent's week gives that parent 183 nights in each of the next two non-leap years, 366 against 364 across the pair. If evening it out matters to you, say so in the plan rather than assuming the calendar does it.
What holidays do to the number
Holidays override the regular rotation, so they move nights that the pattern had already allocated. A balanced alternating rotation keeps the total close to even; an unbalanced one does not.
The classic example is a plan where one parent always gets Christmas and the other always gets Thanksgiving. Christmas week is typically longer, so the split quietly stops being equal. Alternating both by year fixes it.
Check the real number, not the label
Does 182 versus 183 actually matter?
Sometimes. A one-night difference is unlikely to change a child-support calculation on its own, but it can matter where a state's rules turn on crossing a specific threshold, or where a form asks which parent has the children more than half the time.
Where a schedule is exactly equal, many states still require the plan to designate a primary residential parent for specific statutory purposes, school enrollment, or which parent is named on certain records. That designation is a separate decision from the schedule.
Every equal schedule gives the same total
2-2-3, 2-2-5-5, 5-2-2-5, 3-4-4-3 and week-on/week-off all produce 182 or 183 nights each. They differ only in shape: block length, number of exchanges, and whether weekdays stay fixed.
If someone tells you one 50/50 schedule gives more time than another, they're describing how it feels, not how it counts.
